Sanajay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati has landed in trouble. Activists of a Rajput organisation, Shree Rajput Karni Sena, protested and misbehaved with the crew of the film on Friday in Jaipur, police and eyewitnesses said. They not only damaged some cameras, equipment and the set, but also attacked the filmmaker. A video of the crime caught on camera has been going viral on social media. It’s unfortunate that such incidents keep happening time and again where a political party not just interferes with the artistic liberty of a movie, but also gets violent while doing so. B-Town took to Twitter to condemn the act, and sent tweets out in support of Sanjay and Padmavati.

Padmavati tells the story of Alauddin Khilji, the medieval-era Delhi ruler, who fell in love with Rajput queen Padmavati. Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor star in the film. Sonam Kapoor who made her Bollywood debut with Sanjay’s  Saawariya took to Twitter and wrote:

What happened on Padmavati sets is appalling and heinous. Is this the state of the world.

What kind of nonsense are we allowing in this country??? Is there really no decency left? Have we become savages?

This is really sad. Mob fury reacting to rumours and hearsay.

These violent fringe army’s must be controlled, or artists & free thinkers will soon be named as ‘endangered species’. #SanjayLeelaBhansali

Don’t name the new sena on the block. They want free publicity by vandalising the #Padmavati set. Let’s just call them ‘another fringe sena’

We all praised and lauded #MerylStreep and her speech. We must all stand by #SanjayLeelaBhansali. #RuleOfLaw

Shree Rajput Karni Sena’s concern was that there is a sensous dream-sequence in the movie between Padmavati and Alauddin.  And without checking any facts the party attacked the director. “We had earlier requested him (Bhansali) to show us the script which he did not do. We are against distorting of historical facts and we know that he has distorted historical facts,” Vivek Singh of Karni Sena told a news portal.

“We will only allow him to shoot after we see the script,” Singh added.
