The Guardians of the Galaxy team had a special surprise for all of its Indian fans when it shot a special video with Dave Bautista (Drax) and Zoe Saldana (Gamora) wishing India Namaste and informing us of a special treat. That special treat happens to be a promo of the movie edited to the popular ’80s song Jhoom Jhoom Jhoom Baba, from Mithun Chakraborty’s Kasam Paida Karnewale Ki. The said song is composed by Bappi Lahiri and sung by Salman Agha. So why Jhoom Jhoom Jhoom Baba out of all other songs? Well, the one fact is that Chris Pratt’s character, Peter Quill aka Star-Lord is obsessed with ’80s songs, and when it comes to Bollywood, Jhoom Jhoom Jhoom Baba was certainly a chartbuster then.
Here’s the video of the specially-edited trailer…
Well, it is not the first time Hollywood has used a Bollywood song to appeal to us Indians, and it certainly won’t be the last. Looking back in time, here are 5 Bollywood songs that have been used in Hollywood movies much to our surprise.
Chaiyya Chaiyya – Inside Man
Interestingly, this Spike Lee thriller, starring Clive Owen and Denzel Washington, begins with Clive’s character giving a monologue against the backdrop of this popular Shah Rukh Khan – AR Rahman song, before Sukhwinder’s vocals help in setting up the events.
Chamma Chamma – Moulin Rouge
Urmila Matondkar’s special dance song in the 1998 China Gate was used by Baz Luhrmann as a part of a song and dance routine in the musical drama.
Mera Joota Hai Japani – Deadpool
One of the cult characters in this superhero flick with a twist was Dopinder, the Indian taxi driver whom Ryan Reynolds’ merc with a mouth brainwashes enough to kidnap someone who betrayed him. When Deadpool hired Dopinders cab for the first time, the latter was playing this popular Raj Kapoor song in the cab.
Jaan Pehchaan – Ghost World
This famous Gumnaam song is used to set the surroundings of the protagonist, played by Thora Birch, as she replicates the moves from the song.
Chori Chori – The Love Guru
The Love Guru might be one of the tasteless comedies made, but one of its few highlights was when the Love Guru, played by Jimi Mistry, resorts to song and dance routine of Bollywood, using this Mela song, as a form of therapy.
