Phillauri is Anushka Sharma‘s second production, after the critically acclaimed maiden production, NH 10 that was released in 2015. Touching upon the tradition of marrying people to trees that is prevalent in certain parts of North India, Phillauri is a comic spooky take on the practice. Directed by Anshai Lal, Phillauri stars Anushka Sharma, Suraj Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh.

An NRI Punjabi boy from Canada, played by Suraj Sharma return to India to marry his childhood sweetheart, though he is quite reluctant to do so. When the family astrologer finds out that the boy is manglik, his family is advised to get him married to a tree. Against his wished, they carry on with the tradition and they cut the tree later. This releases the spirit of the girl, played by Anushka Sharma, who has been trapped in that tree for 100 years. Since the boy is technically married to her, she tags along with him nearly wrecking havoc in his life. There is also another track about Shashi, before she was dead, and how she fell for the village Casanova Phillauri (Diljit Dosanjh). The first half of Phillauri works due to the performances of Suraj Sharma and Anushka Sharma, and a couple of light moments. Mehreen Pirzada, who plays Suraj’s fiance, is talent to watch out for. The scenes where Suraj learns that he has to marry a tree, or when he meets the ghostly Shashi or Shashi’s curiosity over how things have changed over the century have ample moments to make you chuckle. The flashback portions involving Diljit are yet to make an impact. The music is average. The effects involved in creating Anushka’s ghost form need to be praised.

The first half moves at a leisurely pace and thanks to the lighter moments, keep us entertained. The movie reaches interval point when Kanan and Anu’s relationship develops complications, while in the past, Phillauri begin to develop serious feelings for Shashi. The second half will provide answers on how Shashi dies and how Kanan can get rid of her spirit.
