Nowadays a film featuring any of the top six superstars of Bollywood is bound to fetch a grand opening. Just the presence of Shah Rukh, Aamir, Salman, Akshay, Ajay or Hrithik is enough to pull audiences to the theatre, irrespective of the content. Apart from these superstars, the other films rely on great promotion and content to get them a magical opening. But did you know Abhishek Bachchan too once held the record of highest opening day of Bollywood, albeit for few months but he did.
Well nowadays his box office standing has taken a big hit with his solo starrers flopping at the box office. His last few hit were all multi starrers be it Dhoom 3, Happy New Year or Housefull 3 all films top lined by superstars like Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar respectively.
But there was a time when Abhishek Bachchan was at the top his game whatever movie he was doing was hitting the jackpot with both critical as well as commercial success. The phase was between 2004 to 2007. During that period he gave successful films like Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Guru, Bluffmaster, Dhoom, Dhoom2 etc. But here I am not talking about any of his films of that golden phase of his.
The film I am talking about release much before that. This solo starrer of his got him the biggest opening at that time bigger than any Shah Rukh, Aamir, Salman, Akshay, Ajay or Hrithik’s film. Surprisingly the film’s final verdict was critically disaster and commercially average. The film in question is his debut, Refugee. Also read: It’s raining films for Abhishek Bachchan!
According to Box office India, Refugee opened to Rs 1.56 crore (Rs 1,56,00,000). At the time of its release it opened bigger than other big releases of that year be it Aamir Khan’s Mela, Hrithik Roshan’s Kaho Naa..Pyaar Hai, Shah Rukh Khan’s Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani etc. and became the highest opener ever of Bollywood. There were several factor responsible for it, major being, it was the launchpad of the son of, probably, Bollywood’s most legendary superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Although the record was broken by Hrithik Roshan’s Mission Kashmir, which released approx four months after Refugee, as that film opened to Rs 1.64 crore (Rs 1,64,00,000). But that’s a story for another time.
